Houston-based Intuitive Machines has become the first private U.S. company to land on the lunar surface after its Nova-C lander called Odysseus touched down at a crater close to the moon’s south pole.

Intuitive Machines mission control used Goonhilly Satellite Earth Station in Cornwall, England to finally pick up a faint signal from the spacecraft’s high-gain antenna, and confirm the landing.

“Odysseus has a new home,” said mission director Dr. Tim Craine.

With funding from the Department for Transport via the European Space Agency’s NAVISP program, the National Flying Laboratory Center‘s Saab 340B aircraft, showcased a UK-based SBAS that delivers more precise, reliable navigation data.

While the EU’s European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service, EGNOS, can still be used for non-safety applications in the UK, the trial aims to provide a first step toward a complementary UK SBAS which can be used for critical safety of life navigation services across air, land, and sea.



The trial is being completed by a Viasat-led team of companies in the UK, including Goonhilly Earth Station, CGI UK, GMV, Ordnance Survey, Cranfield University, the Cranfield National Flying Laboratory Center, and Pildo Labs.

Goonhilly Station Steps In To Save Gaia Science Data

The Gaia mission uses the ESA deep space network (DSN) ground stations for communicating with the spacecraft. ESA has worked with Goonhilly in Cornwall, England to validate their satellite antennas for use with several ESA missions, including Gaia. Goonhilly has a long history of supporting spacecraft communications, including the Apollo moon landings. In 2022 there was an extensive test campaign to demonstrate that Goonhilly was compatible with Gaia operations, successfully receiving data from a distance of 1.5 million kilometers without any losses.
